RESEARCHERS have found that the biggest hindrance to vaccinating against potentially tragic preventable diseases, such as influenza, is the lack of professional enthusiasm and insistance.
Misconceptions about flu vaccine are also a barrier: that it causes flu, that it's not effective or that it's not needed, according to a well-referenced article by University of Sydney's Associate Professor Julie Leask and Samantha Carlson published online in The Conversation.
While for many people the flu can be relatively mild, it has been estimated to kill more than 3,000 Australians over the age of 50 years and has taken more children's lives than any other vaccine-preventable disease in Australia between 2005-2014, the data show.
