Priceline’s pharmacy flu jab
April 24, 2012

PHARMACY-based flu vaccinations
should become the norm in
Australia, according to pharmacy
giant Priceline, who aims to make
pharmacies one of the top choices
for Australians when getting their
flu shots.
According to Priceline, pharmacy
vaccinations are popular in many
other countries around the world,
with pharmacies in the US only
outnumbered by doctor’s surgeries
as the number one choice for
people getting their flu jab (18.4%
vs 39.8%).
In comparison, a recent Priceline
survey of Australians found that the
majority of respondents chose to
get their vaccine from their GP or at
work (74% and 21% respectively).
“There are great examples
overseas where pharmacies play a
really important role in flu
prevention,” said Bronwyn
Flanagan, Pharmacy Services
Manager for Priceline Pharmacy.
“In New Zealand they’ve recently
introduced a training program for
pharmacists that enables them to
provide flu jabs on their own.
“These examples show us that we
can have a bigger role in protecting
people from the flu,” she added.
Flanagan went on to say that in
particular Priceline has set its sights
on increasing flu inoculation
rates in Australians aged between
18 and 50.
“Compared to older people who
may see their doctors on a more
regular basis, and therefore are
more likely to be recommended by
their doctor to get the flu jab,
younger people often think that
they don’t need it,” she said.
To that end, Priceline is offering
its flu vaccination service across 80
of its locations nationwide, at a
cost of $30, until 01 June.
