PHARMACEUTICAL Defence Limited (PDL) has issued advice to pharmacists about the administration of the FluMist intranasal flu vaccine.
It reminds pharmacists that the vaccine must be delivered by a qualified pharmacist immuniser, and that the intranasal version is within their scope of practice.
Accurate documentation, correct technique, appropriate post-vaccination care and upload to the Australian Immunisation Register are essential.
"Pharmacists should apply the same considerations as those for the traditional intramuscular vaccine," the insurer stated.
"At a minimum, ensure:
* Maintenance of current qualifications and immunisation competencies
* Robust pre- and post-vaccination procedures
* Correct cold chain management
* Adherence to jurisdictional authorisation, approved product information and relevant guidelines
* Verification of approved age range and contraindications
* Thorough documentation of consent, administration, near misses/incidents and AIR reporting."
PDL recommends pharmacists consult their local health department for advice on funding, age eligibility and scope arrangements, as they differ by jurisdiction.
