A MONASH University-led study highlights the importance of early contraception access for mothers of newborns, often overlooked amid postnatal adjustments and newborn care.
The research found that timely information and services can support family planning, help space pregnancies, and improve health outcomes for both mothers and babies.
The study, published in the Medical Journal of Australia, surveyed general practitioners' views on providing contraceptive care during the routine six-week postnatal check-up.
Offering contraceptive care at this stage can prevent unintended pregnancies and improve the wellbeing of women and their families, said researchers from the SPHERE Centre of Research Excellence at Monash University.
