UPDATING its 2006 guideline
on lipid modification, the UK’s
National Institute for Health and
Care Excellence (NICE) has said
that up to 8,000 lives could be
saved every three years by offering
statins to anyone with a 10% risk of
developing cardiovascular disease
(CVD) within a decade.
Spokespersons for the
organisation have said the weight
of evidence shows that statins are
safe as well as clinically and cost
effective “for use in people with a
10% risk of CVD over 10 years.”
Under the lower threshold, up to
4.5m people could be eligible for
statins and the policy could help to
prevent up to 28,000 heart attacks
