Lucentis’ UK launch

A NEW visual impairment treatment for people with diabetes has been launched in the UK, Lucentis(R) (ranibizumab). The drug is the first licensed therapy to improve vision and vision-related quality of life in people with visual impairment due to diabetic macular oedema. “Ranibizumab has the potential to transform the way we treat DMO,” said Nicholas Beare, Consultant Ophthalmologist at Royal Liverpool University Hospital. “For the last 25 years, laser therapy has been the standard treatment for DMO but it is not generally associated with visual improvement, whereas ranibizumab has been shown to produce a rapid and sustained improvement in vision.”
