Healthy Tasmania
December 22, 2015
THE Tasmanian Government has
announced ambitious plans to cut
tobacco-related illnesses to “make
Tasmania the healthiest population
in Australia by 2025”.
“Tasmanians currently experience
some of the worst population
health outcomes in the country,
with high rates of chronic disease
and health risk factors like smoking,
obesity, poor nutrition, low physical
activity levels and risky alcohol
consumption” said Tasmanian
Minister for Health, Michael
Ferguson.
The five-year strategic plan
includes future initiatives to tackle
lifestyle related illnesses such as
obesity and smoking; with the
Minister telling 9News that they
are proposing that the state lift the
legal smoking age above 18 to 21 or
potentially 25.
Community forums will be held
in Feb 2016, with the Minister
welcoming stakeholder submissions
to address questions raised in the
Consultation Draft.
