THE Australian Medical Association (AMA) has aligned with 11 prominent education and parent groups urging legislators to swiftly enact vaping reforms, echoing growing concerns about the adverse effects of vaping on children's health and development.
The Federal Government's proposed vaping reforms have successfully passed the House of Representatives, with Senators now urged to prioritise the legislation (PD 02 May).
In a united effort, school principals, teachers, and parents have penned a joint letter addressed to all Senators and MPs, highlighting the escalating crisis of vaping within Australian schools.
AMA President Prof Steve Robson emphasised the normalisation of vaping among Australian youth, attributing it to the relentless efforts of big tobacco and the vaping industry.
"Vapes are filled with highly addictive nicotine and laced with chemicals that are known to be dangerous to human health, including formaldehyde, mercury and arsenic," said Robson.
"The human brain does not stop developing until the mid-twenties and nicotine is proven to have negative impacts on cognition, reasoning and attention - not to mention the significant disruption vaping has to school learning environments," he added. JG
