THE Pharmacy Board of Australia
has reminded pharmacists they
must be satisfied that there is a
therapeutic need for the supply of
any pharmacist only medicines.
In a communiqué following the
board’s most recent meeting, on
24 May, the board has highlighted
Guideline 4 of its Guidelines on
practice specific issues.
The guideline mandates more
than simply agreeing to supply the
medicine on request, or merely
asking patients if they have used it
previously and know how to use it.
In addition, in cases where
consumers ask for specific
pharmacist only medicines
by brand name as a result of
advertising, “this does not abrogate
the pharmacist’s statutory
obligation to establish a therapeutic
need and to determine whether
supply should occur,” the Board said. The above article was sent to subscribers in Pharmacy Daily's issue from 04 Jun 13 To see the full newsletter, see the embedded issue below or CLICK HERE to download Pharmacy Daily from 04 Jun 13
