OA hospital stays up

OSTEOPOROSIS, arthritis, back
pain, and other musculoskeletal
conditions are increasingly resulting
in hospitalisation, according to a
new report from the Australian
Institute of Health and Welfare.
Although musculoskeletal
conditions are no more common
than in 2004-05, there has been a
marked increase in hospitalisation
rates, said the report.
Osteoarthritis generated
hospitalisation is mostly related
to knee and hip replacements,
which increased by 32% and 25%
respectively over the decade.
Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis
is also more frequently resulting
in hospitalisation because of the
improved treatments with biologic
disease-modifying anti-rheumatic
drugs (bDMARDs) administered by
specialist rheumatologists often
required a hospital stay.
The report also fingered
comorbidities as causational for
hospital stays with cardiovascular
disease, back problems, and mental
health conditions common.
