NPSA backs Guild/PSA push
August 7, 2013

PEAK pharmacy wholesaler
body the National Pharmaceutical
Services Association has added its
voice to the joint Pharmaceutical
Society of Australia/Guild campaign
calling for an immediate increase
in pharmacy remuneration, in
response to last Fri’s changes to
PBS price disclosure (PD yesterday).
NPSA President Patrick Davies
from Symbion said the changes,
which had been made without
any consultation, would see both
pharmacists and wholesalers feel a
significant impact.
“These changes are putting
the viability of the community
pharmacy network at risk,” he said.
“The industry is already under
intense pressure from government
savings initiatives and decreasing
margins - further cuts will not only
hurt businesses but will also impact
on patient care,” Davies added.
He said the NPSA supports calls
on politicians from both major
parties to commit to increasing
pharmacy remuneration.
“Community pharmacies are
a critical part of the Australian
healthcare system because of the
value-added health advice and
services they provide.
“These services will be the first
to be cut when pharmacists are
looking for savings, so the effects of
further cuts would be significant.”
Yesterday the Guild and the PSA
issued a joint letter urging the
entire community pharmacy sector
to personally lobby local MPs over
the drastic situation.
