New PSA counselling guide
June 7, 2012

THE Pharmaceutical Society of
Australia has published a new
reference work advising pharmacists
on how to counsel patients when
selling complementary and nonprescription
medicines.
Non-Prescription Medicines in the
Pharmacy: A guide to advice and
treatment covers a range of topics
including eye drops, nicotine
replacement therapy, antiinflammatory
pain relievers and
complementary medicines.
PSA national president, Grant
Kardachi, said the guide was an
ideal resource to use when
providing training for pharmacy
assistants and students, to help
them advise on self-care strategies
for minor ailments.
“Counselling of patients within
the pharmacy setting is an
increasingly important role for
pharmacists as the emphasis on
advice and provision of professional
services gathers momentum,” the
PSA said.
There are also Shelf Talker Kits to
prompt consumers to check with
the pharmacist about the safe and
effective use of medicines.
The guide and Shelf Talkers are
available at psa.org.au.
