More NPS medicine data
May 3, 2013

NPS MedicineWise is set to
collect the anonymous prescribing
data of about two million patients,
in a significant expansion of its
MedicineInsight program.
The scheme has been under trial
in northern Victoria’s Goulburn
Valley, and will now be expanded
into Melbourne general practices
as part of a “journey to better
prescribing and healthcare in
Australia”.
Participating practices can receive
clinical reports which identify
areas for improvement, with the
roll-out being staged to ensure
compatibility with the wide range
of GP environments as well as
a strong focus on guaranteeing
patient and doctor confidentiality.
NPS ceo Lynn Weekes said that
the program will next move into
South Australia and NSW, with
plans to also implement it in
Queensland, Tasmania, Western
Australia and the Northern Territory
in the near future.
Once the program is implemented
“we’ll then have a really clear
picture of medicine use and
prescribing across Australia,
including the areas where we can
do better,” Weekes said.
