Patients taking methotrexate
to treat their rheumatoid arthritis,
psoriasis and inflammatory bowel
disease have been accidentally
overdosing by taking it daily rather
than weekly, according to research
published in the Medical Journal of
Australia this week.
Author Dr Rose Cairns of the NSW
Poisons Information Centre urged
changes to avert such accidents
which have resulted in “numerous
deaths” since 2000.
Possible preventative measures
suggested include reducing pack
sizes, distinctive tablet colouring,
clear labelling, co-packaging with
folate and prescribing software
