Junior drug ed needed

SPORTS Medicine Australia (SMA) has called for more funding and support of drug education programs in sports clubs, following Griffith University research which found children as young as 12 were using performance enhancing drugs during sport. The research said that about 5% of junior athletes had been offered such drugs with 4% admitted to using them. Junior athletes thought about one third of all elite athletes used banned drugs, it said. SMA ceo Nello Marino said children needed to have the right information to make informed choices about what they were ingesting and its risks. Barriers to delivering education at club level included that clubs did not know where to start and sports medicine professionals could help by bridging the knowledge gap and encouraging collaboration between club officials, parents and athletes, he said.
