AUSTRALIAN law firm Shine Lawyers has commenced a class action against Johnson & Johnson, alleging its talcum powder products were "defective, unfit for purpose and not of merchantable quality due to the potential to cause cancer".
Cancers include those of the female reproductive system (such as ovarian cancer and fallopian tube cancer), cancers of epithelial tissue (commonly called carcinomas) or cancer of mesothelial tissue and/or linings of the body (including mesothelioma), and result from alleged contamination with asbestos.
Similar class actions in the US have resulted in billions of dollars in legal liabilities for J&J, and while the company maintains its talc products are safe, it has switched to using cornstarch instead.
