FDA hits 9,600 sites

The US Food and Drug
Administration has this week
taken action against almost 10,000
websites which “illegally sell
potentially dangerous, unapproved
prescription medicines”.
According to an FDA statement
the action included seizure of
offending websites and more
than $41 million worth of illegal
medicines across the globe.
It was part of the sixth annual
International Internet Week of
Action (IIWA), which is a global
cooperative effort to combat the
online sale and distribution of
potentially counterfeit and illegal
medical products.
This week’s excitingly named
“Operation Pangea VI” included
the shutting down of 1,677 illegal
pharmacy websites by the FDA,
many of which appeared to be
operating as part of an organised
criminal network which falsely
purported its websites to be
“Canadian Pharmacies,” claiming
their products were “brand name”
and “FDA approved”.
As well as illegal medicines, risks
posed by the sites included credit
card fraud, identity theft and
computer viruses, the FDA said.
