THE future of contact lenses has
been revealed by electronics
giant Samsung, which this week
unveiled electronic versions which
include an integrated display.
Previously limited to the realm
of the imagination in movies like
Robocop and Terminator, the
electronic contact lenses have the
potential to display information
similar to that of the “Google
Glasses” recently launched, which
integrate images from the search
engine with what the wearer is
looking at.
The early stage research for
the contact lenses involves
testing a transparent, flexible and
conductive material on the eyes
of rabbits, which showed no ill-effects
after several hours of use.
At the moment the “display”
only uses a single pixel, but it’s
hoped that this will be extended.
The scientists said other
applications of the technology
include possible biosensors which
could monitor health by sampling
the chemistry of tears.
