COMPULSORY caring. BBC News reports from Beijing that a new law which came into effect this week compels children in China to visit their parents or potentially face fines or jail. China’s new “Elderly Rights Law” deals with the growing problem of lonely elderly people by mandating that adult children must visit their ageing parents. The law says adults should care about their parents’ “spiritual needs” and “never neglect or snub elderly people”. The regulation has been ridiculed by tens of thousands of Chinese web users. Many across China are questioning how the law could be enforced, since it fails to spell out a detailed schedule dictating the frequency with which children should make parental house calls. Like many countries China is facing a major ageing problem in its population, with the number of citizens aged 60 or older predicted to double to almost 400 million by 2030. PHARMACY robbery is the pits. A thief who used Telstra pit covers to smash his way into five NSW pharmacies has had his original sentence increased after an appeal. Mark John Grover pleaded guilty to six counts of breaking into pharmacies (once using a block of bricks) and stealing quantities of pseudoephedrinecontaining products, between 18 February 2010 and 23 November 2010, when he was sentenced at the District Court of NSW in September 2012. He also admitted two charges of using a false driver’s licence to obtain medicines from pharmacies that contained pseudoephedrine, and one count of attempted use of a false documentation. He was originally given a “head sentence” of five years; this has now been increased to seven years and three months.
