SIGNIFICANT reductions in the proportions of residential aged care facility residents prescribed psychotropic medicines, such as antipsychotics and benzodiazepines, was achieved in new Australian research published in the MJA this week.
The 'RedUse' study assessed the impact of a "multi-strategic, interdisciplinary intervention" comprising psychotropic medication audit and feedback, staff education, and interdisciplinary case review at baseline and three months; a final audit was conducted at six months.
