THE Federal Department of Health has posted information for parents around the human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine, providing a useful counselling guide for health professionals.
HPV affects both men and women and is spread mainly by sexual contact.
"Without vaccination, 90% of adults will have a HPV infection at some point in their life.
"There is no treatment to get rid of HPV infection," the site states.
HPV may not always cause symptoms but can persist and cause some cancers or other serious illness.
The vaccination is a safe and reliable way to protect young people from getting a range of HPV-related cancers and diseases.
It involves getting two injections, six months apart.
Young people aged 12-13 can receive the HPV vaccine free of charge at school through the National Immunisation Program.
