Australia ups quit bid

THE Australian Government has
announced $700,000 in funding will
be given to WHO to help aid the
global fight against smoking.
$400,000 of the money will fund
an intergovernmental working
group, covering tax and pricing
measures to reduce demand for
tobacco and $200,000 will be
funneled into work to adapt
existing graphic health warnings
and social marketing materials for
use by low resource countries.
The remaining $100,000 will be
split in half, and will fund an
international database of best
practices to support the Framework
Convention on Tobacco Control
(FCTC) guidelines, whilst the other
$50,000 will help improve periodic
reporting on FCTC implementation.
“Tobacco is one of the deadliest
products in the world and it is in
the interest of all nations to act to
minimise the harm from tobacco
on their population,” said Health
Minister Roxon.
