The US Food and Drug
Administration has introduced
regulatory control around the
safety and effectiveness of
antibacterial soaps in general use.
Although consumers generally
view these products as effective
tools to help prevent the spread
of germs, there is currently no
evidence that they are any more
effective at preventing illness than
washing with plain soap and water,
the agency said.
Manufacturers will be required
to submit their products to testing
the results of which will determine
their right to market.
The proposed rule doesn’t
affect hand sanitisers, wipes or
antibacterial products used in
