Accidental deaths down

A NEW US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention study has found that mortality rates from unintentional injuries in children and teens dropped nearly 30% between 2000 and 2009. The Vital Signs report looked at accident statistics involving children aged 0-19 years and found that whilst overall numbers have been dropping, rates of poisoning in American teens aged 15-19 increased a whopping 91%, a figure which researchers attributed largely to prescription drug overdose. To counter this rise the CDC has suggested that a focus on appropriate prescribing, proper storage and disposal, discouraging medication sharing, and statebased prescription drug monitoring programs may reduce deaths.
