Stricter blood glucose targets
have been recommended by the
UK’s National Institute for Health
and Care Excellence (NICE) in its
new suite of diabetes guidance
which aims to help reduce variation
in the management and care of the
condition.
The guidance covers type 1
diabetes in adults, type 1 and type
2 diabetes in children and young
people, and diabetic foot care.
With most adults with type 1
diabetes presently having HbA1c
scores that are above target levels,
they are at increased risk of longterm
potentially life-threatening
complications.
The new guidleines recommend
adults with type 1 diabetes achieve
a target HbA1c level of 48 mmol/
mol (6.5%) or lower and should
be offered multiple daily injection
basal–bolus insulin regimens.
