Professional services focus
June 15, 2012

THE September 2012 Pharmacy
Barometer will focus on the provision
of professional pharmaceutical
services for profit, according to the
University of Technology Sydney
and Cegedim Strategic Data.
Research for the September
Pharmacy Barometer will begin in
August, with its focus chosen
following the results of the
Pharmacy Barometer Report.
The Report subjected the
Barometer research to rigorous
scrutiny and found that consumer
pharmacy confidence has a rating
of 84.8 out of a possible score of 200.
The report also found that
pharmacists who were optimistic
saw opportunity in professional
services.
The Barometer score was calculated
from the responses to three questions
on the ‘value’ pharmacists’ foresee
for their pharmacy and emotional
insight provided on their
confidence in the future of
community pharmacy as a whole.
“Though overall confidence is
relatively low, what keeps coming
through in the data is that those
who expressed emotional and
‘value’ based optimism about the
future of pharmacy see
opportunity in the provision of
professional services for profit,”
said UTS’ Charlie Benrimoj.
“The challenge is to now convert
this optimism into a business
model, implementation strategy
and program perspective that can
demonstrate financial and
professional development outcomes.
“Clearly, the issue merits further
study and we will be pursuing this
in the next round of Barometer
research,” he added.
Meanwhile, former PSA President
Warwick Plunkett said that whilst
there is interest in the provision of
professional services, there has not
been financial drivers to deliver
implementation.
“The negative impact of
discounters and Price Disclosure
on revenue streams is more likely
to now encourage pharmacists to
seek additional revenue from
services, particularly if facilitated
by outside stakeholders,” he said.
