Pharmacists’ expanding role

Pharmacists are playing a bigger
role in preventative health than ever
before.
Despite ongoing global economic
challenges, there are many
pharmacists proving their value to
the community, and leveraging the
enormous respect and trust they
have with their customers to deliver
improved health outcomes.
Indeed, at Terry White, we’re
seeing more and more of our
pharmacies employing extra
pharmacists to deliver professional
services.
Many of these are early career
pharmacists who are enthusiastic
and professional focused.
With clear KPI’s in services and
solution delivery these pharmacists
are more than funding their role.
Now with medication management
programs such as MedsCheck,
identification of medical conditions
from the review are opening up
further opportunities for providing
real health solutions in the pharmacy.
These solutions – which may be
drug or lifestyle-related – represent
significant savings perhaps otherwise
born by the health system and
exceeding any funding received for
the service.
Unlike yearly HMR reviews,
community pharmacists who have
provided MedsChecks are able to
follow up as often as monthly on
recommendations made in the
review, and to offer a raft of
solutions available in the pharmacy
that can help optimise medication
concordance, disease management
and disease prevention.
No longer are we seeing community
pharmacy as purely transactional.
Successful professional services
pharmacists are leveraging the rich
information we all have in our own
dispensaries to provide real health
solutions.
The more of these “real” solutions
our industry provides, the more we
will find ourselves in the hearts and
minds of the communities we serve.
