Alphapharm parent company Mylan has completed the acquisition of the Agila injectables business from Strides Arcolab, with the US$1.75 billion deal aiming to create a new “global injectables platform” for the company. Alphapharm says the deal significantly expands Mylan’s injectables business and also provides access to new geographic markets across the globe. Along with the takeover a number of other “commercial enhancements” have taken place which will reduce Agila’s long-term reliance on a business to business model and increase its value. These changes “unlock commercial rights and economics in many of Mylan’s key growth markets,” including regaining full commercialisation rights for most of Agila’s US portfolio and “regaining significant product rights in Canada, Australia, Brazil, Japan and South Korea”. According to Mylan president Rajiv Malik, the Agila deal transforms Mylan into a “global powerhouse in injectables R&D and manufacturing,” with four dedicated research & development facilities staffed by over 400 scientists, plus thirteen dedicated manufacturing sites in six countries. The transaction gives Mylan more than 1200 approved injectable products, along with 900 more pending global approvals across a “broad range of therapeutic categories”.
