A NEW Zealand restaurant is
selling a new form of protein -
and it’s proven incredibly popular
since they changed its name.
Dunedin’s Vault 21 has become
a specialist in locust-based
cuisine, with the tasty insects
marketed as “sky prawns”.
A plate of five cooked locusts
costs NZ$5 and executive chef
Greg Piner says “people are just
loving it - we sell out every night”.
Dunedin City Council has
approved the sale of the critters,
which were originally offered raw
prior to a Facebook outcry from
locust lovers.
Now they are kept in a sealed
container in the freezer.
“Once they go to sleep we chuck
them in the hot oil,” Piner said.
“We believe they don’t feel
anything at all”.
The popularity of the sky prawns
has led to a proposal for a full
insect dinner, which will feature
locusts, scorpions and tarantulas.
THE burgeoning deer population
in New York’s Staten Island has led
to a controversial proposal which
would see all of the bucks given
vasectomies.
The three year trial is estimated
to cost about US$2 million,
involving the use of helicopters
to shoot tranquillizer darts into
about 400 of the beasts so they
can be operated on.
An article in the Staten Island
Advance says “the city would be
nuts to try to sterilise every buck
in the herd”.
