Cancer deaths down

The rate of deaths from cancer
is dropping and looks to be
continuing to slow according to a
report released this week by the
Australian Institute of Health and
Welfare (AIHW).
Cancer mortality rates have
generally decreased over time, with
the rate from all cancers combined
decreasing from 199 deaths per
100,000 people in 1968 to 167 per
100,000 in 2012.
Based on mortality trends
projected forward, between 2013
and 2025 the death rate from all
cancers is predicted to continue the
overall downward trend from an
estimated 214 to 183 deaths per
100,000 males, and from 135 to
120 deaths per 100,000 females.
At the same time, because of
the ageing and increasing size of
the population, actual numbers of
deaths will increase in that time.
