PRIME Minister Malcolm Turnbull yesterday accepted the resignation of Martin Bowles, Secretary of the Federal Department of Health.
Bowles is one of Australia's most senior public servants, and will step down on 01 Sep after almost 40 years of civil service including roles within the Queensland and NSW state governments as well as the Commonwealth Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
He became Secretary of the Department of Health in 2014 and has "played an integral role in changes across the sector including the significant recent reforms to government funding for public hospitals in Australia, which will lead to greater efficiency, safety and quality in our hospital system," Turnbull said.
The Pharmacy Guild acknowledged the significant contribution made to the health and pharmaceutical sectors during Bowles' three-year tenure.
"As Secretary of the Department, Mr Bowles oversaw the Department of Health's key role in the negotiation and rolling out of the Sixth Community Pharmacy Agreement, which includes significant benefits for patients, for the health system and for community pharmacy," said Guild president George Tambassis.
